Lane McFadden | The mask | Downtown Manhattan
The mask
September 13, 2001. I spent the day in New Jersey loading supplies for the rescue workers onto ferries and trying to quiet my thoughts with physical labor. Coming back into the city, the smoke and smell were unbearable. Everyone was wearing some sort of mask, whether bandit-style bandannas or carpenter's filters (like my own). I snapped this shot of myself in the window of a car parked outside my building as I walked home at the end of the day. The mood in our entire neighborhood was apocalyptic.
