you find the islands of don det and don khon in southern laos, in the mekong river delta. during the rainy season the river gets 13 kilometers wide. the area is called si pan don, or four thousand islands.

because od their flatness and relative small size, teh islands are ideal for biking. when renting a bike, no need for a passport, just say teh name of your guesthouse and you can take one. without a lock. that is not needed. you pay one dollar a day upon returning the bike. (for someone living in amsterdam all this is simply unbelievable).

between don det and don khon is a bridge, build by the french during colonial times. the islands were important for trade, and as tehre are waterfalls around the islands goods had to be shipped between them for further travel.
